Why kettlebells?

Why kettlebells?

It took me 5 years of training to find Kettlebells! Yes I know why so long? I use to find them a little scary, techniques must be so important?! It took me a few years in the gym watching others swing them around and read all the benefits before I finally took myself off on a course... since then I have never looked back!

Now, after countless hours of practicing, teaching, and training, I now know there is something very special about kettlebell training. I am now on a mission to spread the love for kettlebells.

The magic of the kettlebell appears to have something to do with the cannonball shape and the offset handle, which allow you to manipulate the kettlebell much differently than you could with a dumbbell, barbell, or any other training device. The shape and the handle allow you to perform ballistics and grinds. Ballistics are fast, explosive movements, while grinds are slow and deliberate. This allows for a different type of training experience for faster results.

While there are many great things about kettlebell training, one of the biggest benefits is that all of the exercises are essentially total body exercises. This means you get total body strengthening and conditioning with one single tool. Virtually every fitness goal you want could be accomplished with a kettlebell. However I am not saying you should not do any other sort of training, we all know variety is key.

Benefits of Kettlebell training

  • It’s incredible exercise

When you swing kettlebells, your heart rate can come up as quick and as elevated as it would from any form of jump training, you can even burn up 20 calories a minute, depending on how hard you’re working. That’s equivalent to (if not more than) what you might accomplish in a cardio based class. Plus, these cast iron weights help solve the debate of “Do I do cardio or strength today?” With kettlebells, you get both.

  • Greater fat loss

First, there is the extremely high metabolic cost of throwing the weight around. Second, it’s a strength training workout creating dense muscle mass, which burns calories from fat stores all day long while increasing your resting metabolism.

  • It’s functional training

What exactly does that mean? “Kettlebells are great conditioning tools for developing cardio respiratory and muscular endurance,,” says Wittenstein. They recruit the use of mobility and coordination, too when you do things like switch the kettlebell from one hand to the other. Therefore, routines work motor and balance skills more than traditional weights.Kettlebell training uses fundamental movement patterns making everyday activities easier and injury less likely. You will stand taller, carry packages easier, climb stairs with less effort and have more energy. Kettlebell training offers the most functional training possible, because the parts of the body must work as a unit.

  • Extremely versatile

Kettlebells can help you lose weight, build muscle, enhance sport performance or maintain fitness level, as well as improve quality of life as you age. All with one simple tool.

  • Simplify your life

You don’t have to think about which exercise requires what size weight. You don’t have to figure out which days you do cardio and which days you do strength training because kettlebells combine cardio and strength training. You don’t need to worry about upper body and then lower body exercises. It’s all in one. What could be easier? One kettlebell, two times a week, several drills. Everyone has enough to think about with work, children and running a household; let your workout be uncomplicated.

  • Develops core strength

Kettlebells require you to engage the core in almost every lift. Kettlebells have a reputation for strengthening backs and abs like nothing else before!! (I have noticed such a difference within my core strength since training with Kettlebells!)

  • Better posture

The real thingKettlebells strengthen the entire posterior chain that is key not only to athletic performance, but for simply standing up straight and effortlessly. I have noticed a massive difference within my posture while running since training with Kettlebells.

  • It’s safe for any fitness level, age, shape or size

Movements are simple and you can start using them right away. No matter how old or out-of-shape you are, everyone can do it and should be doing it. Do not be scared!

Hope this gives you that insight to why Kettlebells and why you should give them a try. Kettlebell training works, the results will keep you going!
